The Ayres

This circular walk is fairly easy, mainly along lanes, sand dunes and shingle beaches. The Ayres can be reached by walking along the road from Bride if travelling by bus; directly if driving a car, or from Ramsey by foot along the Raad ny Foillan. From Bride Village head west along the road to Jurby, cut right to the Ayres Visitor Centre, then north along the beach to the Point of Ayre lighthouse, then back along the coast returning to the road leading to Bride at Ballacallow Gap. A round trip of some eight miles with no facilities, so suitable clothing is required, snacks and drinks plus an OS map (Landranger 95 recommended). Most of the breeding birds are found on the heath, but some, notably the terns nest among the pebbles. There are sand banks offshore where gannets can be seen diving for food. Grey seals may also be watched fishing on the same banks.
